Sri Lanka gets Chinese funds to build international airport

Sri Lanka has signed up 410 million US dollars of funding from China including money to build an international airport in the south of the island, a foreign ministry statement said.

Sri Lanka's finance ministry secretary P B Jayasundera and China's vice minister of commerce, Chen Jian had signed thee deals on December 23, for 'concessional' funding for several projects, the foreign ministry said.

An unspecified portion of 410 million funding was for a new international airport in Mattala.

Jayasundera had discussed the progress of power, ports and highways financed by China in Sri Lanka and had said the government wanted to speed up road and rail links to the North which has just emerged from a 30-year war.
