Reason for flooding in Colombo city by rain water is the unauthorized buildings that have been built with the authority of politicians says Colombo Municipal Commissioner Ms. Bhadrani Jayawardene. She points out that politicians, for their political interests, allow people to build unauthorized buildings in the city.

Ms. Jayawardene said politicians have given permission for people to build shops, huts and other constructions across drains and when these drains are blocked and people are affected by rain water politicians put the blame on the Municipality. As a result of unauthorized buildings not only flooding in the city but diseases such as dengue and other environmental issues too have cropped up she pointed out.

The Commissioner said at the moment about 60,000 people have been affected in Colombo Municipal area due to rain and the Municipality is making arrangements with the District Secretariat to provide dry ration to the affected.
